What not to do
- Do not wipe or wash walls, ceilings, or painted surfaces yourself. Wet soot smears and sets.
- Do not use the furnace, air conditioning, or ceiling fans. They spread soot through the building.
- Do not plug in or turn on fire-damaged electronics or appliances.
- Do not eat food, including canned goods, that was exposed to heat or smoke.
- Do not wash smoke-damaged clothing in your own washer. The odor sets.

What should I do the night of the fire?

Can smoke damage be cleaned, or does everything have to be replaced?
More can be cleaned than most people expect, including painted surfaces, cabinets, hard furniture, and many textiles, if it is done quickly and with the right method. Soot is acidic and keeps etching surfaces, so speed matters.
Will the smoke smell ever go away?
Yes, when the odor source is actually removed and the structure, contents, and ductwork are treated. Our Odor Control Technician certification is specifically for this. Air fresheners and ozone alone do not solve it.
Does the water from the fire department cause problems?
It can cause as much damage as the fire. Wet drywall, insulation, and flooring need extraction and drying within the first day or two or mold starts. We handle the water loss as part of the fire loss.
