Mold needs to be taken seriously. Mold in your home can cause allergic reactions and breathing difficulties. Mold in your business can be the source of lawsuits costing millions of dollars. Mold can even be fatal – especially for young children, and people with weakened lungs or compromised immune systems.
Mold can establish itself wherever it is warm, moist, and dark. Bathrooms and showers are common mold trouble spots, but mold can grow in many hidden spots around the home. Mold infestations are common after flooding. And mold can come back even after you think you’ve cleaned it up. Mold spores can spread and grow anywhere they can find moisture and nutrients. They don’t necessarily need actual standing water – humid air can give mold a chance to live, make your life miserable, and damage your home.
So how do you know when it’s time to call for help dealing with mold? You can probably handle a small patch of mold yourself using household cleaners, but there are some situations that call for stronger measures. If the infestation covers more than ten square feet (larger than three feet by three feet section on a wall for instance) that is a large and probably deep infestation.
Another sign of trouble is if mold keeps coming back in the same area. When that happens, there’s a good chance that the mold has penetrated deeper into the structure. You might be killing mold on the surface, but there’s liable to be more mold deeper in that you aren’t reaching.
Finally, if the mold appears in an area that has been flooded with tainted water, especially from a flood or sewage overflow, then you should call for help. Tainted water often carries dangerous varieties of mold that can be hard to clean, or are particularly dangerous to people, or both.
