Water Damaged Furniture: What To Do

At Restore Pro, we know how difficult it can be to make sure that after water damage has happened that you are able to recover the damage as quickly as possible and fix it so that it does not affect your furniture.  The water damage is not as bad as it seems, the key is to make sure that you are able to do it as quickly as possible to prevent further damage.

Here are the steps you need to take to keep everything in check and fix the damage as quickly as possible.

  1. Dry Your Wood Furniture

You want to put the furniture outside if you can so that it can dry in the sunshine and the air. If this is not possible because of the weather or the time of year, the next best thing is to take the furniture and put it in a cold and dry environment so that it will dry out. You want to make sure that you do not put it in a heated environment as this will cause the furniture to crack.

  1. Get Rid of White Spots

When furniture has gotten wet, this is often from mildew and others forming on the surface and that will show in the form of white spots. The trick is to get ahead of these spots. Take equal portions of toothpaste and baking soda and rub it on the spots. Afterwards rub the spots dry with a piece of cotton to fix this problem.

  1. Clean Up All Mildew

Sometimes you will also get black spots on the furniture which comes from mildew. This is an indicator that the water has gotten through the finish of the fabric. You need to remove the finish and then clean it out and refinish the furniture in order to save it. You may need to invest in some gloves, and some polish, and bleach. You will have to bleach the furniture in order to get rid of the problem areas.

  1. Handle Buckled Veneer

The furniture will sometimes warp when it has water contact; you need to soak the furniture and veneer in moisturizer until it is flat again. You will then dry it and clean it. Next get a syringe and fill it with veneer glue, you will then put the needle in the area of the wood that needs the glue and empty it. You will then wait for the glue to dry and then you can continue with the rest of the furniture.
