Water-Damage-Restoration-Tips

Whether the source is a leaky pipe, a natural disaster, or a faulty roof, any source of water entering your house may be the cause of untold damage. If you have this problem in your home or business, there are a few immediate steps you can take to prevent or at least slow down the damage.

First, immediately stop the bleeding, or in this case leaking. Immediately locate the source of the water entry and block it or stop it. If it is coming from your plumbing system, turn off the main water valve to the house. Even if the water is coming in from elsewhere, this is still a good precautionary measure to take. Make sure you know exactly how to do this, so you can easily do so in an emergency.

If you are unable to shut off the main water valve, or the leak continues, try to isolate it or block it off if possible. If this is not possible, evacuate everyone from the house. Find a dry spot outside your home and make sure everyone in your household is accounted for.

When there is a great deal of water involved, your electrical wiring can be a major concern. Check that out immediately if possible. Turn off the power if you can get to your electricity box without walking through the water. If you cannot do so, call an electrician immediately.

If you are a renter, you will need to inform your landlord. If you are a homeowner, inform your insurer and ask if you need to await an adjuster before taking any actions.

Once you have taken these immediate steps to deal with your water damage emergency, evaluate the extent of the damage. You will immediately notice any harm done to your unsecured belongings. However, the worst and often most consequential damage may initially be hidden. Make sure to check the drywall, insulation, framing, and wood.

If the damage is manageable, you may be able to handle it yourself!

If the exposure was extensive, your main concern is to prevent damage to the structure of the building. If this occurs, it may render your entire building unsound and result in massive bills and long-term problems.
