Picture this…The house is clean, you’re all dressed up, the ambiance is set and you’re prepping food in your kitchen for a party in 30 minutes when all of a sudden your kitchen sink backs up creating a colossal mess. Your guests are about to arrive! What do you do?
Many a homeowner has had a problem with a clogged sink. The culprits are usually food items wrongfully disposed of or grease buildup in the pipes. Nevertheless, the experience is frustrating and requires some elbow grease and time. Hopefully, the blockage is easy to fix with one of these methods:
- Method #1: Plunge the sink using a sink plunger. Make sure the plunger fits securely on top of the drain and then gently push down on the tool until you create a vacuum-tight seal. Plunge slowly and without a lot of force so that you avoid a mess and damage to your pipes. Keep at it until the clog is loosened and the water begins to drain.
- Method #2: If you have a drain snake on hand, insert the snake into the drain and turn the crank slowly so it doesn’t damage your pipes. Run the snake until you feel the clog break up and water begins to drain properly.
- Method #3: If water is slow to drain, you may have a clog that is building into a blockage. Pour a half cup of backing soda down the drain followed by a half cup of white vinegar. Let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes and then run hot water through the pipes for another 5 minutes.
If the above methods don’t work, you may have to contact a plumber as you could have an even bigger problem on your hands. The clog could be farther out in your main sewage line which would cause water and waste to back up into your home. When water backs up into your home or is slow to drain from your sink, toilet, or shower, the mess is much larger than a simple clogged sink.
