Water damage is caused by a myriad of problems which includes burst pipes, leaking faucets, washing machine overflow, and many more.  Once water gets out and inundates your home it is only a matter of moments before damage begins to appear on your carpet, floors, walls, ceilings, and foundation.  This type of damage requires special attention in order to prevent or correct mold growth.

What can I do if I cannot hire a professional right away?

If you are unable to hire a professional right away, then you can begin by making sure that all the flood water has receded and take pictures of the mold and water damage in your home for insurance reasons.  Then you can begin the cleanup process outlined below:

1. Remove wet carpeting right away: You should discard it; however, if it is salvageable then make sure that you clean and disinfect it properly.  Also make sure that it is dried as quickly as possible.  Do not reuse any flooded padding.
2. Remove wet insulation: This should be done as soon as possible. Wet insulation stays wet for a very long time and allows mold to grow.
3. Clean with non-phosphate detergents: When you disinfect remember not to mix bleach with ammonia or acids like vinegar and follow all the directions carefully. Disinfectants will kill molds, but they do not prevent regrowth.
4. Do everything you can to speed up drying times: As best you can speedily dry subfloors, slabs, and wall framing prior to replacing insulation, wallboards, and flooring. You can use air conditioning, heaters, fans, or a dehumidifier.
5. If you can, test the moisture content of studs and sheathing: If you can test it use a moisture detector prior to replacing insulation. Moisture content in wood should be below 20% before you close the wall.
6. Continue looking for signs of mold after the cleanup is done.
