Floods can be frightening and quite difficult to deal with, but there are precautions you can take to ensure your safety before, during, and after a flood. Read on to find out about some of RestorePro’s best tips for keeping you and your family safe before, during, and after a flood.
Before A Flood
It is important that before a flood occurs you monitor your surroundings including keeping an eye on the NOAA Weather Radio, local television, radio stations, and/or visiting www.weather.gov for the most up to date weather reports. If a flash flood warning is issued for your area take sure you climb to safety quickly as fas floods develop very quickly.
In the event that you have a little more time before a flood hits RestorePro recommends assembling the following disaster supplies:
- Drinking water-Fill clean containers
- Food that does’t require refrigeration or cooking like canned goods
- Medication and a First Aid Kit
- Battery-powered radio
- Flashlights
- Clothing
- Toiletries
- Extra Batteries
- Cash
- Important documents
You should also be prepared to evacuate at any time which means you need to have an escape route that includes the following:
- A list of places to go
- Alternate travel routes that are not prone to flooding
- A plan for your pets
- A full gas tank in your car
- If you are told to evacuate do so immediately
Protect your property by moving furniture and hazardous materials to higher levels. Also disconnect electrical appliances to avoid electrocution and bring in any possessions that are outside like lawn furniture garbage cans, etc. or securely tie them down. And lastly, seal vents and basements to help prevent flooding.
During a Flood
During a flood RestorePro recommends you be alert and monitor the news and your surroundings. If you do not have to drive don’t and if you do follow recommended routes that are flood free. Evacuate if told to do so immediately and get to high ground. Prior to evacuating make sure to shut off water, gas, and electrical services and lock all doors and windows. Do not walk through flowing water.
After a Flood
Wait until you are told by the proper authorities that it is safe to return to your home. Make sure you once again travel carefully and only take the recommended routes. Take extreme precaution when re-entering your home as the damage caused by the water may have jostled items around or weakened parts of your home. Even if it is safe to enter it is not safe enough to live in. You’ll need to call a professional like RestorePro to help clean up and ensure the safety of your home.
